Tim Armstrong and the Future of Media in Sun Valley

For the past 16 summers, Tim Armstrong has traveled to Sun Valley, Idaho, right after the July 4th holiday to attend the Allen & Co. Conference. This yearly event gathers some of the most influential and wealthiest leaders in media, technology, and finance.

Armstrong, a seasoned tech and advertising executive, is known for orchestrating one of the notable deals from these conferences—the $4.4 billion sale of AOL to Verizon that kicked off over a casual lunch in 2014.

Currently, Armstrong serves as CEO of Flowcode, a platform he created that utilizes QR codes to enhance customer engagement. In a recent chat, he shared insights on some key topics discussed at this year’s conference, which began on a Tuesday.

Unsurprisingly, artificial intelligence emerged as a major topic among attendees. Armstrong described it as the “1,000-pound gorilla” in conversations and meetings, noting that discussions are now centered on three key areas: media, the internet, and AI.

He mentioned that AI is rapidly being adopted, even quicker than the internet was, prompting executives and investors to brainstorm effective strategies for its implementation. For example, Flowcode has introduced “TuesdAIs,” where every Tuesday, different departments focus on utilizing new AI tools and updating processes.

Armstrong emphasized the importance of seizing the moment, saying, “It’s time to paddle out to the next wave. Paddle hard.”

While AI dominated the talks, conversations among media professionals often revolved around sports. Armstrong highlighted sports as a unique aspect that continues to bring large audiences together for live events, a sentiment echoed at earlier festivals like Cannes.

The conference attracted a diverse crowd from the sports world, including commissioners from the NBA, NFL, and MLB, as well as team owners and entrepreneurs.

As a fitting end to the conference, Armstrong took part in some adventure of his own—bridge jumping in one of Idaho’s scenic swimming spots.
