Veteran actor and filmmaker Amol Palekar is showing his support for students protesting the NEET paper leak through a heartfelt open letter. In his message, he stands with the youth-driven movement as protests in Delhi continue, calling for accountability and changes in the education system. Palekar commended the bravery of the students, stating they are taking on the important task of advancing democracy.
In his letter, addressed to “Dear brave students,” Palekar expressed both solidarity and gratitude. He acknowledged that each generation has a duty to carry forward the unfinished work of democracy, and he believes the current generation has embraced both responsibility and privilege.
Drawing inspiration from the play Caligula by Albert Camus, Palekar highlighted the dangers of unchecked power becoming disconnected from moral duty. He noted that the recent events in Delhi echo these themes. The actor also referenced significant historical student movements around the world, such as those in Paris in 1968, the anti-apartheid protests in South Africa, and the Tiananmen Square demonstrations, underscoring that attempts to silence youthful voices have never succeeded in quelling the quest for freedom.
Palekar expressed his distress at the police actions against the protesters, stating that the violent images deeply affected him. He asserted that universities should be platforms where societal questions are challenged, emphasizing that pressing those in power for answers is a democratic responsibility. “When the response to questions is violence instead of reason, it is the State that diminishes itself, not the students,” he remarked.
He shared why he did not join the protests in person, citing age-related physical limitations but reaffirming that his beliefs remain steadfast. Palekar explained he wanted to ensure the focus stayed on the students, declaring, “This is your movement, your voice, your moment of moral courage.”
In closing, Palekar promised ongoing support to the students alongside his wife, Sandhya, offering help in legal, medical, and financial matters if needed. He encouraged them to stay hopeful, saying, “Today you may be seen as students, but tomorrow you’ll be remembered as the generation that chose courage over silence. The future belongs to those who refuse to lose their humanity.”
The demonstrations sparked by the alleged NEET paper leak are calling for vital reforms in the education system and have seen backing from various figures in the film industry. Many celebrities are advocating for accountability, dialogue, and a peaceful resolution, joining in solidarity with the students.
