Google Introduces AI Mode to Indian Users for Enhanced Search Experience

Google is making waves in India by rolling out a new feature, AI Mode, designed to transform how users approach online searches. In a country where Google is synonymous with the internet for millions, this feature promises to deliver responses that are more conversational and tailored.

With AI Mode, users can ask questions about anything—from restaurant recommendations to opinions on trending topics—and receive informative, well-structured answers. Hema Budaraju, VP of Product Management at Google Search, describes the goal as making search feel effortless. “We want users to experience a smoother process, letting Google assist them more effectively with both complex and vague inquiries.”

After a brief testing period, AI Mode is now available to all Google Search users in India, marking it as the first international market to receive this feature after the United States. Budaraju noted, “India is crucial for us as we seek to understand diverse user needs.”

Unlike traditional search results that display multiple links, AI Mode operates through a separate tab. Users must actively select this option when they wish to engage in a more conversational format with Google.

This new functionality is powered by Google’s advanced Gemini AI model, which enables the system to break down questions into smaller parts and conduct multiple searches simultaneously. By handling this complexity on behalf of the user, AI Mode aims to provide a richer search experience, delivering answers that are thorough and relevant.

While Google’s traditional search forms the backbone of online browsing, Budaraju emphasizes that AI Mode is not just an experimental feature, but part of a fundamental shift in how users interact with the web. With AI Mode, the focus is on reducing effort, not choices—allowing users to feel more confident that they are receiving accurate, high-quality information.

However, some have expressed concerns about the potential risks of an AI-driven search, especially regarding the accuracy of critical information like health advice or legal advice. Budaraju addresses these worries by ensuring users are cautioned to consult professionals for serious matters. She highlights Google’s ongoing commitment to maintaining high-quality standards for all its services.

As AI Mode continues to roll out, it is reshaping the search experience. Users can expect immediate and relevant answers, but whether they will still click through to other sources remains to be seen. For now, the introduction of AI Mode represents a new way to interact with Google, making it easier for users to explore the vast amount of information available on the internet.
