NATO Chief Calls for Continued Support for Ukraine Amid Ongoing Conflict

In Berlin, NATO leader Mark Rutte emphasized the need for member nations to maintain their focus on the Ukraine conflict, urging a significant boost in financial support for Kyiv, aiming for $60 billion by 2026.

Rutte’s remarks came during a defense ministers’ meeting attended by key supporters of Ukraine, including officials from Germany and Britain. As the conflict with Russia approaches its fifth year, he highlighted the importance of providing consistent support for Ukraine.

He expressed concerns that global attention might be shifting, especially with the recent U.S.-Israeli tensions regarding Iran. “We must make sure we do not lose sight of Ukraine,” Rutte stated firmly, pointing out that support for Kyiv is crucial.

U.S.-led negotiations aimed at resolving Europe’s most severe conflict since World War II have foundered recently, coinciding with the escalation of tensions in the Middle East. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky voiced frustration on Tuesday, noting that U.S. negotiators appear preoccupied and “have no time for Ukraine.”

Rutte reiterated that the efforts to support Ukraine’s defense are more crucial than ever. He mentioned that “too few nations are carrying too much of the burden” and called on all allies to contribute more towards reaching the ambitious $60 billion target for security assistance this year.

Key priorities for this funding include enhancing Ukraine’s air defense capabilities and increasing the supply of drones, missiles, and long-range artillery.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov shared that the nation experienced one of the toughest winters recently, as Russia targeted critical infrastructure with hundreds of missiles and drones to undermine Ukraine’s energy systems. However, he noted that the resilience of Ukraine, bolstered by improved air defenses, helped them withstand these challenges.
