Pat Cummins Supports Young Opener Sam Konstas Amidst Struggles
Australian cricket captain Pat Cummins has come out to support young opener Sam Konstas, ensuring that the leadership team still believes in the promising player’s potential despite a tough start to his Test career.
Sam Konstas made a splash in his debut match against India, scoring a noteworthy 60 runs off just 65 balls. However, the 19-year-old has since faced challenges in maintaining his form, with scores of 8, 23, 22, 3, 5, 25, and a duck in his next seven innings. In the ongoing Test series against the West Indies, he has managed only 33 runs in four innings, leading to an average of just 8.25.
While Konstas has yet to reach the 50-run mark in his first two Tests, Australia has performed well, recently winning by 133 runs in the second match, which gives them a solid 2-0 lead in the series. Although glimpses of his talent were evident during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, he hasn’t quite made the impact expected in the current series.
In his post-match comments, Cummins was clear in expressing the team’s support for Konstas. “Look, he’s been good,” he said when asked about the young player’s performance. “Anyone starting their Test career is chosen for a reason; we know he has what it takes.”
Cummins emphasized the importance of patience, both for the player facing challenges and for those supporting him. Drawing from his own experiences of a rocky start to his Test career due to injuries, he noted the mental hurdles players face at this level. “For batsmen, it’s about knowing your scoring areas and what tempo suits you best. Don’t let every innings feel like the biggest deal,” he advised.
In the high-stakes world of Test cricket, especially with the influence of social media, Cummins’ encouraging words provide a much-needed boost for Konstas and other newcomers still finding their rhythm. The captain also reminded everyone that even the best players experience rough patches. “Even the greatest batters don’t hit their average three out of four times,” he pointed out.
With steadfast support from Cummins and the team, the future still looks bright for Sam Konstas.
