Pahalgam Terror Attack: Recent Developments

The Indian Army Chief, General Upendra Dwivedi, visited Srinagar to assess security measures in the region after a tragic terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of 26 individuals, predominantly tourists. His visit involved a review of security arrangements and a trip to the site of the attack.

Earlier, the government convened an all-party meeting to discuss responses to the attack, where opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, expressed full support for the government’s actions moving forward.

Calls for Stronger Action

Political leaders from various parties emphasized the need for decisive action against terrorism, addressing concerns about security lapses in Pahalgam. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju highlighted a unified stance among all parties to combat terrorism collaboratively.

In related incidents, Pakistan announced a suspension of all trade with India and expelled Indian diplomats, escalating tensions in the region.

Key Updates on Response Measures

  • India has suspended the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan until credible action is taken against cross-border terrorism.
  • The Indian government expelled three military attaches from Pakistan and reduced its diplomatic presence in India.
  • Pakistani nationals are now barred from entering India under the SAARC visa exemption scheme, and existing visa holders have been directed to leave within 48 hours.
  • India also closed the Integrated Check Post at Attari immediately and suspended visa services for Pakistani nationals.

On an international front, the United Nations urged both India and Pakistan to maintain restraint to avoid further escalation of tensions.

Community and Political Reactions

In response to the attack, various demonstrations unfolded across India:

  • Candlelight vigils were organized in tribute to the victims in places like Patna, Lucknow, and Vijayawada.
  • Leaders and citizens expressed solidarity, with many demanding justice and support for the victims’ families.

Local actions included a protest outside the Pakistan High Commission in London by members of the Indian community, condemning the attack. Prominent politicians, like Telangana’s Chief Minister, urged strong responses to enhance national security.

Ongoing Investigation and Recovery

As the investigation into the attack progresses, hospitals are providing updates on the condition of victims. One injured doctor from Tamil Nadu is currently critical and receiving intensive care in New Delhi.

This situation has provoked widespread political mobilization, uniting various factions under a common cause to seek justice and reinforce national security.
