The Weekly Healthcare Roundup: Key News You Need to Know

Welcome to your helpful update on the latest happenings in healthcare. This news summary will give busy healthcare professionals a quick overview of important news from the field. Here’s a look at five significant headlines that you should be aware of this week, covering innovations, regulatory updates, and more.

1. AI Enhancements in Virtual Care
A recent study from Cedars-Sinai highlights the potential for artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance care in virtual urgent care settings. Researchers found that AI tools can improve decision-making and ensure adherence to treatment guidelines. Notably, when there were differences in recommendations between AI and doctors, the AI suggestions were often viewed as higher quality. However, human physicians showed greater adaptability to changing conditions in patient consultations.

2. FDA Reviews ONS-5010 for Eye Treatment
The FDA has accepted Outlook Therapeutics’ application for ONS-5010, a treatment aimed at wet age-related macular degeneration. This application has been earmarked as a Class 2 review, with the FDA aiming to reach a decision by August 27, 2025. This product is a crucial step forward for managing eye health in patients with this condition.

3. Impact of Socioeconomic Status on Kidney Transplants in Kids
A new study reveals that socioeconomic factors significantly affect pediatric preemptive kidney transplant rates. Although guidelines recommend that children with advanced chronic kidney disease receive such transplants early, data from 2021 shows that only a quarter of these children in the U.S. actually received preemptive transplants. Research conducted at the University of Minnesota indicates that lower socioeconomic status is linked to fewer chances of receiving these transplants.

4. Launch of Dexcom G7 Continuous Glucose Monitor
The FDA has approved the Dexcom G7 continuous glucose monitoring system. This new device is designed for adults with diabetes and boasts an impressive wear time of 15.5 days while providing top-notch accuracy. The G7 is an upgrade that builds on the strengths of previous Dexcom models, aiming to assist patients in better managing their condition.

5. Promising Psoriasis Treatment Results
In an analysis of a recent clinical trial, teenagers with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis showed significant improvement after receiving icotrokinra (JNJ-2113). At the 16-week mark, about 75% of participants reported clearer skin compared to those on a placebo. Importantly, the treatment appeared safe with fewer reported side effects compared to the placebo group.
