Kohli Ready to Confront Spin Challenge in IPL Showdown

In the lead-up to the exciting IPL 2025 match against Chennai Super Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s batting coach Dinesh Karthik has come out to reassure fans about Virat Kohli’s capability to tackle spin bowling. Karthik emphasized that Kohli is in great form and prepared to face the strong spin attack from CSK during their encounter on March 28 in Chennai.

Kohli opened the season impressively, scoring a quick fifty in RCB’s recent match against Kolkata Knight Riders. Karthik highlighted Kohli’s remarkable performance in major tournaments, particularly in the ODI World Cup and the Champions Trophy, noting that Kohli’s success proves he can handle spin effectively.

During the Champions Trophy, Kohli was India’s second-highest run-scorer, tallying 218 runs, including a century in a crucial match against Pakistan. He also made headlines in the 2023 World Cup by surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most runs in a single edition, with a total of 765 runs.

In the IPL opener against Kolkata, Kohli appeared comfortable battling against KKR’s spinners, scoring 59 runs off 36 balls and guiding his team to victory by chasing down a target of 175 runs in just 16.2 overs.

Karthik noted, "He has been scoring well lately, especially in white-ball cricket, and that’s important when considering how he plays against spin. I don’t want to go too deep into stats, but his performances speak for themselves." He also reflected on Kohli’s key contributions in high-pressure situations, specifically during the World Cup and Champions Trophy.

Despite facing criticism over his scoring rate against spin in the IPL’s middle overs, Kohli has been actively working on his game. He has reintroduced several shots, including sweeps and slog sweeps, to improve his responses to spin bowling.

Karthik Shares Insights on Kohli’s Drive

Karthik shared a motivating story from a recent practice session at MA Chidambaram Stadium, emphasizing Kohli’s continuous quest for improvement. "Just moments ago, he wanted to practice another shot. This shows his incredible desire to enhance his skills,” said Karthik before the match against CSK.

He further added, "He is striving to improve and push his limits. Right now, he is batting with confidence, perhaps better than ever in the IPL."

In preparation for the CSK match, Kohli dedicated time in the nets, practicing against various types of spin bowlers. He is set to face a tough challenge, especially from Noor Ahmad, who made a strong debut for CSK with four wickets, alongside experienced spinners Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin on a pitch known for assisting spin.

RCB will be counting on Kohli to lead the charge as they seek to overcome a 13-year winless streak against CSK in Chennai.
