New Zealand’s Captain Confident Ahead of Champions Trophy Final Against India
New Zealand’s cricket captain, Mitchell Santner, is feeling optimistic about his team’s chances as they prepare for the Champions Trophy final against India. The Kiwi squad arrived in Dubai on Thursday, March 6, three days prior to the highly anticipated match.
In a press briefing shortly after landing, Santner expressed confidence in his team’s performance, especially following their impressive semi-final victory over South Africa, where they won by 50 runs. This tournament marks Santner’s first time leading New Zealand in an International Cricket Council (ICC) event. He noted that the conditions in Dubai could be different from what they faced in Lahore, stating that the pitch might provide more grip and turn, but he welcomed the extra challenge.
"The Indian team has played all their matches here in Dubai, so they know the pitch well. We have to adjust to the conditions, which might be a bit slower compared to Lahore. It’s likely to be a tough match, but we’re ready for that," Santner said.
Looking back to the group stage, Santner acknowledged that his team faced India once before, where they suffered a defeat by 44 runs. However, he believes that the experience from that match will benefit his players this time around. "Facing a strong side like India is always a challenge. The game we had against them gives us good insight. We’re on a good roll now, and hopefully, it continues," he remarked.
The busy travel schedule between Pakistan and Dubai has kept the New Zealand team on their toes, but Santner indicated that they have adapted well to the rapid movement. "It’s just part of this tournament’s nature, moving around frequently. We’ve been to various places, and the guys understand that it’s all part of the game. As long as we’re prepared for the match, we’re good to go," he concluded.
As the final approaches, the New Zealand team remains focused and ready to give their all on the field against India.
