India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, responded strongly to critics after the Indian team advanced to the final of the Champions Trophy. During a press conference following their thrilling 4-wicket win against Australia at the Dubai International Stadium, Gambhir referred to some critics as “perpetual cribbers” and emphasized that he is unfazed by outside opinions.
Gambhir’s remarks were directed at commentators, including former players Nasser Hussain and Mike Atherton, who raised questions about whether India’s single-venue play in the ICC Champions Trophy was an advantage. While other teams had to switch between three cities in Pakistan and Dubai, Gambhir insisted that Dubai was a neutral ground for all teams.
He explained, “It’s as neutral for us as it is for any other team. I can’t remember the last time we played here. The plan was to use two main spinners at every venue since the tournament is in the subcontinent. This match was the first time we played with two front-line spinners.”
Gambhir also dismissed claims of undue advantage, stating that practice conditions at the ICC Academy were quite different from those at the stadium. “People just need to grow up,” he added, expressing his frustration with the ongoing criticism.
Addressing concerns about team selections and management following recent series defeats to New Zealand and Australia, Gambhir was clear about his priorities. He stated, “I don’t care about the criticism. My responsibility is to be honest to 140 crore Indians and the players in that dressing room. Outside opinions don’t matter to me.”
He further explained that among the five spinners selected, three are quality all-rounders, and it was perfectly acceptable to have only two front-line spinners in the squad.
In the semi-final against Australia, India confidently leaned on their strategy of utilizing four spinners. The team successfully bowled Australia out for 264 runs and chased down the target with four wickets to spare. With the team now focused on the final, Gambhir’s leadership and determination remain clear as they aim for victory.
