Virat Kohli’s Advice to Young Cricketers: Stay Hungry for Success

Star Indian cricketer Virat Kohli has shared an important message for young players about the challenges of fame and fortune in the Indian Premier League (IPL). At the recently held RCB Innovation Lab’s Indian Sports Summit, he emphasized that true success in cricket goes beyond just money and recognition.

Kohli noted that the rise of franchise cricket has led many young athletes to gain fame and financial security much faster than before. He remarked, “Many equate their drive to the financial rewards they see today.” While financial success is crucial in such a high-stakes environment, Kohli urged young players to stay focused on their long-term goals.

“You might think, ‘This is great; I don’t have to deal with pressure for too long. I can just go out there and hit some big shots,’” he mentioned. However, he warned that settling for short-term accomplishments might hinder their future growth in the sport. Kohli encouraged them to aim for careers lasting 15 to 20 years, seeking respect from the cricketing community and their idols.

As someone who has thrived in various formats for over a decade, Kohli highlighted the importance of discipline and resilience. He said, “Staying on top is a challenging journey that requires commitment and the ability to face tough times.”

While praising the fearless style of contemporary batters, Kohli also pointed out that pressure situations still test a player’s overall skills, especially in the later stages of the tournament. “Let’s see how they handle chasing a big score on a difficult pitch when under pressure,” he commented.

Adaptability is crucial for a successful batter, according to Kohli. He advised players to adjust their strategies based on match conditions: “You should be capable of playing in different ways, not just one.” If circumstances don’t support aggressive plays, players need to find other ways to lead their team to victory.

Kohli also stressed the importance of technique, fitness, and preparation, as these factors help batters adapt to different situations on the field. “It’s about understanding game scenarios and preparing adequately,” he said.

In conclusion, Kohli’s message to young cricketers is clear: while the rewards of the IPL can be tempting, staying committed and driving towards long-term success is essential for a fulfilling cricketing career.
