Trump Anticipates Visit from China’s Xi, Talks Trade and More
During a flight on Air Force One, U.S. President Donald Trump shared his thoughts on a potential visit from Chinese President Xi Jinping to the United States, although he didn’t specify when that might happen. Trump expressed optimism about a new trade deal between the U.S. and China, indicating that discussions between the two leaders could play a key role in addressing existing trade tariffs.
Trump mentioned, “We’ll eventually have President Xi and everyone else coming to the U.S.,” while discussing visits from various world leaders.
Xi last visited the U.S. in November 2023, meeting with then-President Joe Biden to agree on restoring military communications and tackling fentanyl production. Prior to Trump’s inauguration on January 20, he and Xi had a conversation about several topics, including the popular app TikTok, trade relations, and Taiwan.
On Wednesday, Trump reiterated his concerns regarding TikTok, mentioning ongoing discussions with China as efforts continue to negotiate a sale of the app, which is owned by Chinese company ByteDance. He noted he had also spoken with Xi since taking office but did not disclose specific details of their conversation.
In response to media inquiries about Trump’s comments, China’s foreign ministry chose not to directly address the matter, instead referring back to their planned communication prior to Trump’s presidency.
In another topic, Trump commented on U.S.-China relations, which have been strained for several years due to issues like trade tariffs, cybersecurity, TikTok, Taiwan, and other significant concerns, including the origins of COVID-19.
Additionally, Trump expressed optimism about making a deal with Russia to help end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, suggesting that the Russians have the advantage in negotiations due to the territory they have gained in the war. “I believe they want to see this end,” Trump stated.
