Ceasefire Reached in Gaza Amid Support from India
New Delhi – A long-anticipated ceasefire between Israel and Hamas has taken effect in Gaza. Israeli Ambassador Reuven Azar expressed gratitude to New Delhi for backing Israel’s right to self-defense during this period of conflict.
The recent ceasefire and the agreement for the release of hostages come after 15 months of violence, which was ignited by a sudden attack from Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023. This agreement aims to halt the ongoing war and facilitate the return of Israeli hostages held by Hamas.
In a video statement released by the Israeli embassy, Ambassador Azar stated, "I would like to thank the Indian government for supporting our right to defend ourselves, and we especially appreciate the strong support from the Indian people."
The backdrop of this truce is a significant military operation launched by Israel in response to the October attack. While India condemned the Hamas assault, it has consistently advocated for a ceasefire and for conditions conducive to direct peace talks, aiming for a two-state solution regarding the Palestinian issue.
Azar noted that this ceasefire marks the first step in a broader agreement that could secure the release of hostages and prevent future attacks similar to those witnessed on October 7. He warned that peace cannot be achieved if Hamas is permitted to regroup and strengthen its military capabilities.
Azar also criticized the Iranian regime, asserting that Iran remains one of the biggest threats to regional stability.
On Wednesday, India welcomed the ceasefire agreement. The Ministry of External Affairs stated, "We welcome the announcement of the agreement for the release of hostages and a ceasefire in Gaza." They expressed hope that the ceasefire will enable safe and sustained humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza.
This development has raised hopes for peace and recovery in a region that has faced prolonged turmoil.
