Tashkent Update: Strengthening India-Uzbekistan Ties

In a significant development, Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev emphasized the strong historical connections between Uzbekistan and India during a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Tashkent on Sunday. He expressed his delight in seeing these ties evolve and grow in today’s world, indicating that both nations have great potential as strategic partners for continued collaboration.

At a joint press conference, President Mirziyoyev thanked Prime Minister Modi for his visit, noting that their discussions had led to important agreements and offered new direction for their bilateral relationship. He highlighted the meaningful dialogues that took place, showcasing the friendly rapport between the two leaders and their countries.

“Our conversations today reflect the close friendship and strategic partnership we enjoy, which is significant on the global stage,” President Mirziyoyev shared. The discussions covered various topics and established a clear roadmap for future cooperation.

He praised India’s advancements in digital technology and sustainable development, acknowledging the country’s position as a leader in innovation. “We are excited about the progress India has made and plan to align our cooperation with these developments,” he stated, reaffirming their commitment to a comprehensive roadmap that includes multiple sectors.

President Mirziyoyev indicated that the relationship between India and Uzbekistan has now transitioned into a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, underscoring the depth of their cooperation. They have created a special mechanism to ensure that all agreements are effectively implemented and dedicated teams will focus on trade and economic cooperation.

Over the past two days, the two nations engaged in discussions that not only addressed current issues but also set up frameworks for effective collaboration, particularly in investment projects led by Indian companies. The discussions were aimed at exploring new opportunities to enhance bilateral ties.

Key sectors for future collaboration include energy, culture, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, jewellery, and critical minerals. The Uzbek President stated that specific roadmaps would be developed for these areas, with plans for team exchanges to solidify their objectives. Furthermore, he highlighted the importance of their partnership in the space sector for strengthening people-to-people connections.

Both nations will also continue to support each other in international forums, including BRICS and the United Nations, reinforcing their commitment to global cooperation.

Reflecting on the historical links between the two nations, President Mirziyoyev pointed out that cultural ties are evident, with four Indian universities contributing positively to education in Uzbekistan. Facilities like the Lal Bahadur Shastri Centre for Indian Culture and the Mahatma Gandhi Centre have been making a notable impact.

To enhance travel and interactions between citizens of both countries, President Mirziyoyev announced strides towards promoting easier travel, including a new 30-day visa-free regime and increased direct flights. “We are working on a comprehensive strategy to put all our agreements into action,” he concluded, expressing a personal commitment to oversee the process alongside Prime Minister Modi.

This meeting marks a promising step forward in deepening the longstanding relationship between India and Uzbekistan, showcasing a mutual desire for growth and cooperation.
