Gaza Ceasefire Agreement Goes Live as Hostilities Cease Following Hold-Up

Ceasefire Agreement Reached Between Israel and Hamas Amid Ongoing Conflict

JERUSALEM/CAIRO: A ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip officially began on Sunday after a nearly three-hour delay, temporarily halting a 15-month-long conflict that has caused immense destruction and shifted the political landscape in the Middle East.

Residents in Gaza reported a calm atmosphere with no new military actions taking place shortly before the ceasefire was put into effect. However, Israeli airstrikes and artillery attacks resulted in the deaths of 13 Palestinians during the window between the scheduled start time of 0630 GMT and the actual implementation at 0915 GMT, as reported by Palestinian medical officials.

The delay was attributed by Israel to Hamas’s failure to provide the names of the first three hostages to be released under the deal. In contrast, Hamas cited "technical" reasons but did not elaborate further. A Palestinian official familiar with the situation shared that mediators had requested a 48-hour period of calm before initiating the ceasefire. Continued Israeli attacks close to the deadline complicated the process of gathering this information.

Two hours after the original deadline, Hamas communicated the names of the hostages designated for release: Romi Gonen, Doron Steinbrecher, and Emily Damari. Although Israeli officials acknowledged receiving the list, they did not immediately confirm the names.

This long-awaited ceasefire may play a significant role in ending the Israeli bombings in Gaza, which were triggered by a Hamas assault on Israel on October 7, 2023, that led to around 1,200 Israeli casualties, according to government sources. In retaliation, Israel’s military response has resulted in widespread devastation in Gaza, with nearly 47,000 Palestinian lives lost, according to health authorities in the territory.

The conflict has also escalated tensions across the Middle East, particularly between Israel and Iran, which supports Hamas and other paramilitary groups opposed to Israel and the U.S.

Last-Minute Developments Surrounding the Ceasefire

Before the ceasefire took effect at 0630 GMT, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the agreement could not go into effect until Hamas provided the necessary hostage information. On the day of the ceasefire, Israeli military officials reported continued strikes against “terror targets” across northern and central Gaza, threatening further action if Hamas did not comply with the agreement terms.

Despite the planned ceasefire, the Palestinian Civil Emergency Service reported that at least 13 individuals were killed in the Israeli attacks prior to its official start. Reports indicated military strikes in areas such as Gaza City and Beit Hanoun, causing panic among residents who had returned in hope of peace.

Israeli forces have also begun withdrawing from certain locations within Gaza, as reported by media outlets supportive of Hamas.

The three-part ceasefire agreement followed extensive negotiations facilitated by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States, coinciding with the upcoming inauguration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. In the first phase, which will span six weeks, 33 of the remaining 98 hostages – including women, children, and the elderly – will be freed in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian detainees. The first three hostages are set to be released through the Red Cross, following a pattern of exchanging one hostage for 30 Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli facilities.

Under the agreement, Hamas is expected to inform the International Committee of the Red Cross about the location where the hostages will be handed over.

What Lies Ahead for Gaza?

The Biden administration has been working in conjunction with Israeli officials to ensure the deal is successfully executed. As the inauguration approached, Trump stressed the urgency of the agreement, warning that consequences would follow if the hostages were not freed.

However, the future of Gaza remains uncertain without a broader agreement to rebuild the region, which would require vast financial resources and time. While the immediate aim of the ceasefire is to end hostilities, the potential for renewed conflict remains.

Hamas has remained resilient, maintaining control of Gaza for nearly two decades despite suffering significant losses in leadership and members. Israel has stated its intention to prevent Hamas from regaining power, clearing large areas within the territory.

The return of hostages may alleviate some public frustration towards Prime Minister Netanyahu and his government, particularly following the security failures on October 7 that resulted in significant Israeli casualties.

Regional Repercussions of the Conflict

The ongoing war has reverberated throughout the Middle East, sparking confrontations with Iranian-backed groups, including Hezbollah. This situation marks a significant moment in regional dynamics, as Iran’s support network faces substantial challenges and limitations.

Despite the military setbacks for groups like Hezbollah, which was once considered a formidable threat, Israel must address growing scrutiny and isolation prompted by the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Netanyahu is currently grappling with international legal challenges related to war crimes allegations.

The complexities of the situation continue to evolve, with multiple factors contributing to the ongoing tension and instability in the region.
