Teen Prodigy Shocks World No. 6 in Australian Open Upset
Nineteen-year-old Jakub Mensik celebrated a remarkable victory on January 15, 2025, by defeating World No. 6 Casper Ruud in the second round of the Australian Open. The young Czech showcased his talent with a score of 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, thrilling the crowd at the Margaret Court Arena with an impressive display of skill.
This win for Mensik follows the stunning upset by 18-year-old Joao Fonseca, who eliminated World No. 9 Andrey Rublev in the opening round, highlighting a promising start for the next generation of tennis stars this season.
For the first time in almost two decades, two teenagers have knocked out top 10 players in men’s singles at a Grand Slam. The last pair to achieve this were none other than Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray in 2006. Mensik demonstrated his awareness of tennis history during a post-match interview, recalling Djokovic’s name and receiving cheers from the enthusiastic Melbourne audience when he learned that Murray was the other player.
Mensik, hailing from Prostejov, Czechia, recently reached a career-high ranking of 48 and has already advanced to the third round in three different Grand Slam tournaments. His latest performance in Melbourne matches his best Grand Slam run to date.
About Jakub Mensik
Mensik began his journey in tennis on the junior circuit, peaking with a combined ITF junior ranking of World No. 3 in January 2022. He made a significant mark by reaching the final of the 2022 Australian Open Junior singles, although an unfortunate injury saw him finish as runner-up against Bruno Kuzuhara.
In 2023, Mensik transitioned to the professional level and quickly proved his mettle. He made history by becoming the youngest Czech player to win a Challenger title at just 17 at the Sparta Prague Open, a feat reminiscent of former World No. 4 Tomas Berdych.
Last year (2024) was a breakthrough year for him. Mensik qualified for the Australian Open and notably defeated former top-ten player Denis Shapovalov in the first round. At the Qatar Open, he achieved an impressive series of victories over established players like Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and even reached his first ATP final, where he ultimately lost to Karen Khachanov. This remarkable journey helped him break into the top 100 rankings, making him the youngest player in that category at 18.
Mensik’s impressive momentum carried into his Masters 1000 debut at the BNP Paribas Open, where he recorded his first main draw win. He also reached the third round of the Mutua Madrid Open, defeating top 10 player Grigor Dimitrov, and kept his streak alive by reaching the third round of the US Open for the second consecutive year, adding wins against Felix Auger-Aliassime and Tristan Schoolkate to his growing list of accomplishments.
As he continues to shine on the international stage, all eyes will certainly be on Jakub Mensik as he navigates his promising career in tennis.
