Rohit Sharma Opens Up Amid Criticism, Experts Weigh In
Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar recently expressed his thoughts on Rohit Sharma’s decision to speak during a broadcast interview despite not being a part of the playing squad for the fifth Test against Australia. In a frank conversation in Sydney, Rohit addressed his challenges with batting and responded to rumors about his future in Test cricket.
Manjrekar appreciated Rohit’s honesty but hinted that there might have been an underlying reason for the interview. He believes Rohit wanted to clarify certain points, especially after Gautam Gambhir, the head coach, received praise for deciding to leave Rohit out of the game.
"Rohit wanted to set the record straight. There was a perception that Gambhir was making a bold choice by excluding him, and I think Rohit felt the need to address that," Manjrekar noted after India’s loss in Sydney on January 5.
During the pre-match press conference, Gambhir did not confirm Rohit’s participation in the Test, but stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah clarified that the decision to sit out the game was Rohit’s own. "Our captain has shown great leadership by choosing to rest. This reflects the unity within our team," Bumrah said after winning the toss.
On another note, Manjrekar discussed Rohit’s comments about retirement, emphasizing that while players can choose their time to retire, selection for the team is not entirely in their hands. He pointed out that it’s the selectors’ responsibility to decide who plays for India.
"I liked that Rohit acknowledged he couldn’t be part of a struggling batting lineup. But when players say they control their future, I find this problematic. While you can decide when to retire, it’s the selectors who should determine when a player’s journey with the national team concludes," he explained.
Rohit Sharma had a tough stint during the Australia tour, scoring only 31 runs in three Tests. His performance in the 2024–2025 Test season was challenging, with 164 runs in eight matches at an average of just 10.94. As captain, he led India to two victories but faced defeat in five matches, marking a notable failure as the team missed out on qualifying for the World Test Championship final for the first time.
As the cricketing world watches closely, Rohit’s future in Test cricket remains a hot topic, sparking discussions among fans and experts alike.
