Tragic Plane Crash in Brazil Claims Nine Lives
SAO PAULO: A small plane crashed in the tourist city of Gramado, in southern Brazil, on Sunday morning, resulting in the deaths of at least nine people, according to local officials. The aircraft crashed into a commercial area, causing widespread damage.
The plane hit the chimney of a building, struck a house’s second floor, and ultimately landed on a furniture store, as reported by the security department of Rio Grande do Sul state. An inn nearby also sustained damage from the crash.
There are no survivors from the incident, confirmed Cleber dos Santos Lima, the director of the Interior Police Department. "The civil defense has confirmed nine fatalities," he stated.
While authorities are still verifying the exact number of passengers and crew aboard the Piper Cheyenne 400 turboprop, it was initially believed that around ten people were on the flight. Additionally, at least 15 individuals have been hospitalized, mainly due to smoke inhalation caused by the resulting fire.
The aircraft had taken off from Canela, another nearby tourist destination in Rio Grande do Sul. Gramado is well-known for its vibrant tourism, particularly during the festive Christmas period, and this tragic event has shocked the community.
