Nathan McSweeney Reflects on Support from Teammate Marnus Labuschagne After Squad Change
Australian cricketer Nathan McSweeney recently opened up about the encouraging words shared by his teammate Marnus Labuschagne after he was dropped from the national Test team. McSweeney was left out for the final two Tests against India and was replaced by Sam Konstas.
At just 25 years old, McSweeney has faced a challenging start to his career, managing to score only 72 runs in his first three matches. In the wake of being excluded from the squad, he recalled Labuschagne’s uplifting message, which reminded him that every journey has its highs and lows.
"Marnus told me, ‘It’s not where you start, it’s where you end.’ He mentioned that a good story involves ups and downs and is all part of the learning process," McSweeney shared following a recent match with the Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League.
Initially, McSweeney earned his spot on the team due to promising performances against India A and in the Sheffield Shield tournament. Unfortunately, he struggled to replicate that success at the international level, facing significant difficulty against India’s fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who dismissed him four out of five times.
A Stellar Performance in the Big Bash League
Despite the setback of being dropped, McSweeney showed his determination by scoring an impressive fifty for the Brisbane Heat against the Adelaide Strikers in the recently held Match 9 of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25.
He arrived at the crease when Brisbane was at 14/1, chasing a total of 175 runs. McSweeney played a key role in a solid partnership, contributing to a 66-run stand with Matt Renshaw, who scored 54 runs off 27 balls. McSweeney ended the innings unbeaten with a remarkable 78 runs from just 49 balls.
His standout performance included a thrilling sequence where he struck four consecutive fours in one over, swinging the game’s momentum back in favor of the Brisbane Heat. In a nail-biting finish, McSweeney’s steady batting helped his team secure a three-wicket victory, demonstrating his resilience and talent on the field.
