Insight: Syrian Rebels Unearth Brutal Legacy of Assad’s Regime
This week, as rebel forces celebrate their victory, the harsh reality of former Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime is coming to light. The aftermath of his oppressive rule is visible in the political prisons now liberated by the rebels.
Syrian rebel leader Abu Mohammed al-Golani has made a promise to dismantle the remaining security forces linked to Assad’s regime and to close down prisons that have held political opponents. In a rush of hope and desperation, thousands of Syrians rushed to various prison facilities across the country, eager to free their loved ones. Many were released alive, but there were also tragic discoveries of bodies, while some remain unaccounted for.
In a significant move, U.S. prosecutors have identified two officials who allegedly ran a notorious torture facility at the Mezzeh air force base in Damascus. They claim that the victims included political prisoners, peaceful protesters, and even an American woman believed to have been executed.
The indictment specifically names Jamil Hassan, director of the Syrian air force’s intelligence division, and Abdul Salam Mahmoud, who is accused of managing the torture center.
Among the most infamous prisons is Saydnaya Prison, situated just outside Damascus. In the wake of Assad’s downfall, many citizens have been sifting through this grim facility, hoping to uncover information about their missing family members. While some were freed soon after the regime’s fall, the search continues, and fears grow as no recent survivors have been located.
Many have gathered outside Saydnaya Prison, disturbing the silence of its dark halls, while anxiously waiting for news of their loved ones. Over the years, thousands suffered and lost their lives in what has been deemed a "human slaughterhouse," with estimates suggesting that at least 30,000 people were executed since the prison’s inception.
Among those searching, a tearful Ghada Assad expressed her anguish, asking, "Where is everyone? Where are everyone’s children?" Many like her are desperately seeking answers amid the rubble of the prison.
Khairiya Ismail, 54, echoed the tragic sentiment, saying, "There is not a home, there is not a woman in Syria who didn’t lose a brother, a child or a husband" during Assad’s rule.
Reports indicate that since 2011, around 150,000 people have either been detained or gone missing in Syria, with tens of thousands believed to have been imprisoned at Saydnaya. Human rights organizations have estimated that between 10,000 and 20,000 people were still being held in the prison back in 2017, with claims of mass executions occurring routinely.
As the search for the truth continues, the scars of Assad’s regime linger, a haunting reminder of the brutal past that many Syrians are now trying to escape from.
