New Robot Patrols Chinese Streets for Law Enforcement
A scene reminiscent of a science fiction story has been spotted on the streets of China, where spherical drones are now working alongside police officers. Logon Technology, a Chinese robotics company, recently introduced the RT-G autonomous spherical robot, which they describe as a significant advancement in technology aimed at helping and sometimes replacing humans in hazardous situations.
These new spherical robots can operate on both land and water, reaching speeds of up to 35 km/h (about 22 mph). They are designed to withstand impacts equivalent to 8,818 pounds (approximately 4 tons), making them sturdy additions to law enforcement capabilities.
Footage shared by a TikTok user showed one of these robots patrolling Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, a vibrant city with nearly 12 million residents. The robot was seen monitoring the area alongside four police officers, demonstrating how technology is being integrated into community safety measures.
The RT-G robots come equipped with advanced artificial intelligence (AI) features, including facial recognition technology. This enables them to identify and immobilize suspects, serving as a high-tech tool for police forces.
China’s growing reliance on robotics reflects a broader trend of countries merging advanced technology with traditional policing to enhance public safety. In the United States, similar initiatives are also unfolding. For instance, New York City introduced robotic dogs in April 2023, intended to assist with high-risk investigations while ensuring transparency in their use.
The introduction of these robotic patrols marks a new chapter in law enforcement, blending modern technology with community protection efforts to create a safer environment for citizens.
