A gunman was killed in Jordan after he shot and wounded three police officers near the Israeli embassy in Amman early on Sunday, according to local authorities.
The incident occurred in the Rabiah neighborhood, where the assailant opened fire. In response, police pursued the gunman and ultimately shot him dead. The Public Security Directorate stated that the gunman fired at the security forces after being chased and surrounded.
Jordan’s communications minister, Mohamed Momani, labeled the incident a terrorist attack targeting the country’s security personnel. He emphasized that any threats to national security would be met with a strong response.
While the police have not released the gunman’s identity or potential motives, Momani mentioned that he had a criminal background related to drug trafficking. Investigations into the incident are still ongoing.
Jordan maintains a peace agreement with Israel from 1994, but tensions have risen in recent months due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, ignited by Hamas’ attacks on October 7, 2023. The country is home to a significant Palestinian population and has seen numerous protests outside the Israeli embassy, leading to confrontations with law enforcement.
