U.S. Officials Confirm Ukraine Briefed Ahead of Russian Missile Attack

A U.S. official has confirmed that Ukrainian authorities were informed prior to a recent attack involving a new Russian type of missile. This preparation was aimed at helping them respond to the potential threat, which was labeled as an experimental Intermediate-range ballistic missile.

In a national address on Thursday evening, Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged the missile strike, stating it was a reaction to the United States and the United Kingdom’s support of Ukraine’s use of Western-supplied long-range missiles to hit Russian targets.

The attack targeted the city of Dnipro, and initial reports indicated it might have been an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) strike, a usage that would have represented a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict. However, both Russian and U.S. sources later clarified that it was not an ICBM. Putin also claimed that the missile poses a serious challenge to Western air defenses, suggesting it travels at speeds of up to Mach 10—equivalent to about 2.5 miles per second.

U.S. officials have expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of this missile, known as the Oreshnik, in altering the course of the conflict. They noted that while Russia may possess only a limited number of these missiles, Ukraine has already endured numerous attacks with more powerful weaponry.

An official emphasized, "While we take all threats against Ukraine seriously, it’s crucial to remember that Russia might be exaggerating its capabilities to instill fear in Ukraine and its allies."

In related developments, President Biden recently allowed the use of U.S.-supplied Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) by Ukraine against Russian targets. Following this decision, Ukrainian forces launched strikes on military sites in Bryansk, located over 70 miles from Ukraine’s border.

Putin’s speech included statements about testing the Oreshnik missile system in combat conditions as a response to NATO’s actions against Russia. He indicated that future deployment of these missiles would depend on the actions of the U.S. and its allies.

Moreover, while Putin claimed that Russia would notify Ukrainians about upcoming strikes, it remains unclear if any warning was sent to residents in Dnipro before this recent attack. The targeted areas included both defense facilities and civilian infrastructure, raising concerns about the impact on non-combatants.

The Pentagon confirmed that Russia notified the U.S. about the impending attack, although it is uncertain whether Moscow specified which city would be targeted. A U.S. official stated that the U.S. remains dedicated to enhancing Ukraine’s air defense capabilities, having already supplied additional Patriot systems and missiles.

As tensions continue to rise, the situation in Ukraine remains critical, with ongoing discussions about military support and potential responses to future threats.
