Pope Makes Steady Progress in Recovery Journey

The Holy See Press Office provided an update on Pope Francis’s health, sharing encouraging news about his ongoing recovery. On Friday, the office reported that the Pope is showing steady improvements and needs less oxygen than before.

After being hospitalized for a polymicrobial infection that led to bilateral pneumonia, Pope Francis was released from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Sunday, March 23, with a “protected discharge.” Since then, he has been recuperating at the Casa Santa Marta.

The latest health update highlights further improvements in his breathing, movement, and voice, and blood tests have returned positive results. He has been undergoing physical therapy to aid his mobility and respiratory function, which has allowed him to spend longer periods without needing supplemental oxygen.

Pope Francis continues to keep up with his work and remains in good spirits. He has welcomed visits from various officials within the Roman Curia, including Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra and Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher.

While the Pope’s health is improving, the Press Office noted it’s still early to confirm his participation in Holy Week events, as some plans may depend on the weather. For the upcoming Palm Sunday Mass, Cardinal Leonardo Sandri will represent the Pope.

Recently, the Pope made headlines with a surprise visit to St. Peter’s Basilica while out for a walk. He also had a private audience with King Charles III and Queen Camilla, offering his warm wishes on their anniversary. His first public appearance since leaving the hospital occurred at a Mass for the Jubilee of the Sick and Healthcare Workers, where he greeted the crowd and wished them a good Sunday.

The next update on Pope Francis’s health is expected to be released on Tuesday, April 15.
