Trump Announces Tariffs on Trade Partners, Declares April 2 ‘Liberation Day’

On April 2, 2025, President Donald Trump held a significant event in the White House’s Rose Garden where he made a major announcement regarding tariffs on several key trading partners, including India. Referring to this day as "Liberation Day," Trump emphasized its importance in American history, stating that foreign nations had taken advantage of the U.S. in trade for years.

During his speech, Trump claimed that the U.S. had been "looted" by trade partners and stated his administration’s intention to implement "reciprocal tariffs." This means tariffs will be set to match those charged by other countries on American goods. He presented a chart outlining the tariffs that will be applied to various nations, indicating that the U.S. would impose tariffs at about half the rate of those currently levied on American products.

Details of the Tariff Structure

President Trump announced specific tariffs for various countries. India will face a 26% tariff, while China will have a 34% tariff imposed. Additionally, the European Union will see a 20% tariff, the United Kingdom will experience a 10% tariff, and Japan will face a 24% tariff. It’s important to note that these country-specific tariffs come on top of a baseline 10% tariff that will apply to all imports. Among these measures, a notable 25% tariff will also be imposed on foreign-made automobiles.

Implementation Timeline

Following the announcement, the White House indicated that there are security concerns connected to ongoing trade deficits, which justified the need for immediate action. The baseline 10% tariff on all imports is set to take effect at 12:01 AM local time on April 5. In contrast, the newly established country-specific tariffs will begin on April 9 at the same time.

This move marks a pivotal moment in U.S. trade policy, reflecting the Trump administration’s ongoing efforts to reshape trade relationships and address perceived inequities in international trade practices.
