India and the U.S. Begin Trade Talks in Washington

Today, India and the United States are set to restart discussions on the first phase of their bilateral trade agreement in Washington, D.C. This round of talks will last for three days and is expected to address recent changes in U.S. tariffs.

The discussions come after a significant ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court that affected tariffs previously imposed by former President Donald Trump. Following this ruling, the U.S. introduced a 10% tariff on all countries starting February 24, set to last for 150 days.

Darpan Jain, the additional secretary of the Department of Commerce, is leading the Indian delegation. The talks will also touch on two investigations initiated by the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) against India. India has firmly rejected the allegations from these investigations, calling for their termination due to a lack of solid evidence in the initiation notice.

The postponed meeting between the chief negotiators, which was originally set for February, is now taking place this month.
