In an intense match on March 6, 2025, at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, Harmanpreet Kaur and Sophie Ecclestone found themselves in a heated altercation during the Women’s Premier League (WPL) clash between the Mumbai Indians (MI) and UP Warriorz (UPW).
The drama unfolded in the final over of the UP Warriorz’s innings. Due to a slow over rate, the Mumbai Indians were hit with a penalty by on-field umpire Ajitesh Argal, who informed Harmanpreet that she could have only three fielders outside the circle instead of the usual four. Unhappy with this decision, Harmanpreet voiced her protests and engaged in a conversation with the umpire.
Amelia Kerr, who was ready to bowl the last over, also entered the discussion, prompting Sophie Ecclestone—who was at the non-striker’s end—to intervene as well. This only fueled Harmanpreet’s frustrations, and she displayed some passionately expressive gestures. Eventually, umpire N Janani stepped in to restore order and play resumed. Fortunately for MI, the extra fielder in the circle didn’t have a huge impact, as Kerr only conceded seven runs while taking two crucial wickets, helping limit the Warriorz to 150 runs for nine wickets.
In the aftermath of the heated exchange, Harmanpreet was fined 10% of her match fees for violating the WPL Code of Conduct, specifically for showing dissent towards the umpire’s ruling. She admitted to a Level 1 offence under Article 2.8.
Despite the controversy, the Mumbai Indians emerged victorious, winning the match by six wickets. Kerr made history by becoming the first MI bowler to secure a five-wicket haul in the WPL, finishing with outstanding figures of 4 overs, 38 runs, and 5 wickets. However, Harmanpreet’s batting performance was underwhelming; she was dismissed for just four runs.
Hayley Matthews earned the Player of the Match title for her impressive innings of 68 runs off 46 balls, which included eight fours and two sixes. With this win, the Mumbai Indians climbed to the second spot in the points table, while the UP Warriorz faced the reality of being nearly eliminated from the tournament.
