Zaheer Khan Becomes Co-Owner of Jaffna Franchise in Lanka Premier League
Former Indian fast bowler Zaheer Khan has taken a big step in franchise cricket by becoming a co-owner of the Jaffna franchise in the Lanka Premier League (LPL). This move comes after the franchise was acquired by Anchor Sports AB, a global sports ownership group based in Stockholm.
The team, formerly known as Jaffna Kings, has now been renamed Anchor Jaffna Kings, marking the start of a new chapter under its new ownership. Nagendra Siddoutam, who owns Anchor Sports, is partnering with Zaheer Khan to enhance their investments in the world of cricket.
Anchor Sports isn’t new to franchise cricket; they also own teams like the Antwerp Anchors in Belgium and the Vancouver Anchors in Canada. The Jaffna acquisition adds to their growing portfolio in the sport.
This change in ownership comes at a great time for the Jaffna team, which is currently among the top two teams in the LPL points table. Jaffna has had a remarkable history in the tournament, winning four championships during its six years.
Anil Mohan, the Chairman and CEO of Innovative Production Group, which holds the tournament rights, welcomed Anchor Sports to the LPL family. He noted the franchise’s impressive legacy, stating, “We are excited to see Anchor Sports take over the legendary Jaffna franchise. Their fresh vision and energy will help maintain high standards in the Lanka Premier League.”
Zaheer Khan expressed his excitement about the investment, highlighting his connection to Sri Lankan cricket. “I’ve always admired the various bowling talents from Sri Lanka. I have fond memories of competing there, and being an owner now is thrilling. I’m eager to start this journey with the Jaffna Anchors,” he shared.
LPL Tournament Director Samantha Dodanwela also praised Zaheer’s involvement, noting the significant impact he can have on developing local talent. “Having an experienced player like Zaheer on board is a fantastic boost for the league. His guidance will be crucial for our young players, both on and off the field,” she added.
With new ownership and a history of success, the future looks bright for Anchor Jaffna Kings in the Lanka Premier League.
