The government of Goa has officially declared the Hindi movie Chhaava as tax-free in the state. The film, which stars Vicky Kaushal in the role of the Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, was released in theaters on February 14.
Goa’s Chief Minister, Pramod Sawant, made the announcement on social media, expressing that the film serves as an inspiration due to the sacrifices made by Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. He stated, “I am pleased to announce that Chhaava, based on the life and sacrifices of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, will be tax-free in Goa.” CM Sawant emphasized that the movie highlights the valor and courage of Sambhaji Maharaj, who fought valiantly against the Mughals and the Portuguese, making his story an inspiring one for all.
In a similar move, Madhya Pradesh’s Chief Minister, Mohan Yadav, also declared Chhaava tax-free in his state this Wednesday. The announcements from both Goa and Madhya Pradesh were timed to coincide with the 395th birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who founded the Maratha Empire and is the father of Chhatrapati Sambhaji.
Directed by Laxman Utekar and produced by Dinesh Vijan under Maddock Films, Chhaava features Vicky Kaushal alongside Rashmika Mandanna and Akshaye Khanna. The film is based on the Marathi novel Chhava by Shivaji Sawant and has received positive feedback from both audiences and critics. It is projected to become the first Bollywood film of 2025 to surpass the ₹200-crore mark, having already outperformed Sky Force, which collected ₹112 crore, to become the highest-grossing Hindi film of the year so far.
