Mumbai is set to welcome its ninth IMAX theatre, located at the Inox Sky City Mall in Borivali. This new cinema is expected to open its doors before March 31, 2025. The growing popularity of IMAX screens has seen a surge in their numbers across the city, with residents of South Mumbai already enjoying a new IMAX experience at the iconic Eros cinema.
Sources indicate that the IMAX theatre in Borivali will feature a screen with a seating capacity of 228, making it slightly larger than the recently refurbished IMAX at Cinepolis Nexus Seawoods. The new multiplex will include a total of 10 screens, a blend of IMAX and standard screens, alongside special auditoriums like Insignia and MX4D, boasting a total seating capacity of 1,372 across all screens.
Plans are in place to officially launch the theatre soon, pending a few remaining permissions. It is anticipated that the inauguration will occur by the end of the financial year, allowing film enthusiasts in Borivali to enjoy the latest blockbusters in an immersive setting.
With the addition of this IMAX theatre, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region will outpace Delhi-NCR, offering the highest number of IMAX screens in the country. Other IMAX locations in Mumbai include Miraj Wadala, PVR Icon Lower Parel, Inox Maison BKC, Inox R City Ghatkopar, Eros Inox Churchgate, Inox Megaplex Malad, Cinepolis Nexus Seawoods, and Cinepolis Viviana Thane.
Residents of Borivali are excited about the mall and cinema’s upcoming launch, as the area currently lacks a large shopping venue. The nearest major mall, Growel’s 101, is located approximately 3 kilometers away, making this new development particularly appealing. The IMAX theatre is expected to be one of the main attractions, easily accessible from the nearby Devipada Metro Station.
In related news, a new Cinepolis multiplex has recently opened in Ghansoli, Navi Mumbai, featuring four screens. Meanwhile, Inox Neelyog, located outside Ghatkopar Station, has closed down, leading to speculation about it being taken over by another multiplex chain.
