The 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) took place in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, celebrating the valuable contributions of the Indian community abroad to India’s growth and progress. This year’s theme, “Diaspora’s Contribution to a Viksit Bharat,” highlighted the importance of Indians living worldwide in shaping the nation’s future.

The event was officially inaugurated by India’s Minister of External Affairs, Dr. S. Jaishankar, alongside Odisha’s Chief Minister, Mohan Chandran Majhi. The gathering included various Union and state ministers and began with the Youth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, which focused on youth leadership and its role in addressing global issues. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the main event on January 9, stating that PBD has evolved into a vital platform for connecting India with its diaspora. He acknowledged the significant influence that Indians abroad have in promoting India’s presence globally and creating pathways for future collaboration.

Over the three days of the conference, sessions covered essential topics like sustainable development, women’s empowerment, and cultural links. Notable leaders and experts joined plenary discussions, exploring how the diaspora can assist in India’s goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047. The event also featured delightful cultural performances, showcasing India’s rich heritage. The Gala Cultural Show on January 9 was particularly captivating, displaying classical and folk dances from various regions of India, emphasizing the diverse culture connecting Indians worldwide.

On January 10, President Droupadi Murmu led a closing session that inspired attendees to deepen ties within the diaspora and between nations. The event was a vital platform for discussing key issues and reinforced the message that collective efforts can drive meaningful advancements in India and beyond.

A standout moment was the speech by Kishore Reddy, President of the Indian CEO Forum and a past president of the Sri Lanka India Society. His address offered valuable insights into how business leaders can contribute to sustainable development through diaspora engagement. It also symbolized the strengthening of relationships between India and Sri Lanka. Reddy emphasized the importance of economic collaboration and cultural exchanges, noting that connections between people are essential for mutual growth.

His focus on green connections and sustainable development highlighted not only the need for shared growth but also the potential benefits that collaboration can offer to both nations. Reddy’s vision for unity and sustainability resonated with attendees, earning him enthusiastic applause.

The participation of representatives from around 40 Sri Lankan delegates, including officials from the Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin in Sri Lanka (GOPIO), further emphasized the importance of India-Sri Lanka relations. These interactions strengthened the bonds between the two nations, fostering greater collaboration and mutual advancement.

The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2025 was more than just a celebration of the Indian diaspora; it demonstrated India’s dedication to working with its global community to address common challenges and create new opportunities. The event included engaging discussions, cultural programs, and networking sessions that brought together policymakers, business leaders, and members of the Indian diaspora from around the globe. Key themes revolved around sustainable development, technological innovation, and youth engagement.

As the event came to a close, it left a lasting impression on all participants, celebrating the achievements of the Indian community abroad while reinforcing the significance of global unity and cooperation. The insights shared by leaders such as Kishore Reddy showcased the transformative effects of dialogue in shaping a brighter future for India and its neighboring countries.

In conclusion, the 2025 edition of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Bhubaneswar highlighted India’s commitment to building bridges worldwide, fostering vital relationships that promote a more connected and prosperous global community.
