In a thrilling start to the Women’s Asia Cup, Deepti Sharma made history by becoming the leading wicket-taker in Women’s T20 International cricket. During India’s opening match against Thailand in Dubai, the experienced all-rounder delivered an incredible bowling performance, helping her team secure a convincing 94-run victory.

Batting first, India set a competitive target of 159 runs, and then it was up to the bowlers to hold that lead. Deepti rose to the occasion in sensational fashion, claiming three wickets without conceding a single run, achieving incredible bowling figures of 3 wickets for 0 runs over just 1.1 overs.

This remarkable achievement propelled her total to 171 wickets in Women’s T20Is, putting her ahead of her closest rival, Thailand’s Thipatcha Putthawong. Deepti entered this match tied on wickets but only needed one more to take sole ownership of the record.

After the match, Deepti, who also celebrated her 150th T20I appearance, emphasized the importance of focusing on individual performance and teamwork rather than getting too far ahead in the tournament. “I always believe in myself and focus on improving each day to support my team. It’s a fantastic way to kick off the tournament. We have more matches to play, and getting a win in the first game helps build momentum,” she told the media.

In what can only be described as a masterclass, Deepti entered the game in the ninth over and made her mark immediately. She bowled a perfect delivery that turned sharply into batsman Naomi Hamilton, leading to her dismissal. Just two balls later, Nannaphat Chaihan tried to hit a short ball but ended up sending a catch to short mid-wicket, completing a double-wicket maiden over.

Deepti returned later in the innings to claim her third wicket. Nannapat Koncharoenkai, who had been a thorn in India’s side with 41 runs off 48 balls, attempted to defend a delivery that spun sharply. The ball hit her pads and looped up towards the off side, where Richa Ghosh made a brilliant diving catch.

As a result of Deepti’s exceptional bowling, Thailand was bowled out for just 65 runs in 16.1 overs. This stunning performance not only highlighted her skill but also marked a fantastic beginning to India’s campaign in the Asia Cup.
