Macron Emphasizes Peace that Respects Ukraine’s Sovereignty
In an interview with the Financial Times, French President Emmanuel Macron cautioned against a peace agreement in Ukraine that might be seen as “capitulation.” He expressed concerns that such an outcome would be detrimental to all parties involved. This statement comes just after former US President Donald Trump stirred the waters by suggesting he would initiate discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding Ukraine.
Trump, speaking on Thursday, indicated his belief that Putin is interested in peace in Ukraine and would communicate differently if that were not the case.
Macron highlighted that while Ukraine should take the lead in talks about its territory and sovereignty, Europe has an important role in ensuring regional stability. He stated, “The international community has a duty to engage in discussions about security guarantees, especially the Europeans. This is crucial for the security of the whole region.”
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is attending a security conference in Germany, where he is scheduled to meet with US Vice President JD Vance. There is growing concern among Kyiv and its European allies that the United States and Russia might reach an agreement about the future of Ukraine without involving them in the talks.
