Fast bowler Kuldeep Sen is set to make a comeback to cricket in January 2024, following a challenging period. He had been out of action since December 2022 due to a back injury he sustained during his debut series against Bangladesh. Recently, Kuldeep was picked up by Punjab Kings in the mega-auction for the Indian Premier League in November 2024.

Reflecting on his journey, Kuldeep shared insights about his early days in cricket. Unlike many players who start at a young age, he began playing at 15. Initially, he kept his cricket pursuits a secret from most of his family, as his father did not have an interest in the sport. Only his mother was aware of his passion for cricket. Kuldeep explained, “My family didn’t know much about cricket. Coming from a middle-class background, they weren’t familiar with how to pursue the sport. Although everyone loved to watch cricket, my father only became a fan after I started playing.”

Financial difficulties also made it hard for Kuldeep in his early career. However, his selection for the Madhya Pradesh team in domestic cricket in 2019 helped change that, earning him his father’s support and easing financial burdens. Since then, he made his international debut for India against Bangladesh in 2022.

Now back in shape, Kuldeep is ready to bowl at top speed for Punjab Kings in the 2025 Indian Premier League season. He spoke about his excitement before the auction, feeling a strong intuition that he would be chosen by Punjab Kings. “Even before the auction started, I had this feeling. I mentioned to my friends that Punjab Kings would pick me. I first tried out for them in 2018, so it felt like the right moment for me,” he recalled.

Kuldeep is also looking forward to teaming up again with his former Rajasthan Royals teammate, Yuzvendra Chahal. He described Chahal’s cheerful personality and shared how much he enjoyed his company. “I have spent three years with Yuzi bhai. He brings humor and fun to our time together, both on the field and off. He has a kind heart and is always willing to share his knowledge, but he also loves to joke around,” Kuldeep shared with a smile.

As he prepares for the new season, Kuldeep is hopeful for the experiences and opportunities that lie ahead with Punjab Kings.
