Elon Musk’s DOGE Task Force Expands Its Reach, Raising Concerns
In a recent development, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Tesla CEO Elon Musk under the administration of former President Donald Trump, has gained access to sensitive financial data from the U.S. Treasury. This includes crucial information related to Social Security and Medicare payment systems. News reports indicate that this access could put taxpayer information at risk, leading to worries about potential misuse.
Senator Raises Alarm Over Potential Manipulations
Senator Ron Wyden, a prominent Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee, expressed his concerns in a letter addressed to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. He warned that the intentions behind Musk’s team gaining access to these payment systems might be to manipulate or withhold funds from specific programs. Wyden emphasized that these systems should remain free from political influences, as any interference could negatively impact the economy and national security.
Resignation of Treasury Official Sparks Speculation
Shortly after DOGE’s request for Treasury access, acting Deputy Secretary David Lebryk announced his resignation after over thirty years in the role. Although his resignation letter made no direct mention of DOGE, sources suggest it was influenced by Musk’s group. In his farewell message, Lebryk stated his pride in the Fiscal Service’s vital role in maintaining financial stability.
Musk Defends the Actions of His Team
Following Lebryk’s resignation, Musk took to his social media platform, X, to defend DOGE. He claimed that Treasury officials had been approving payments to fraudulent and even terrorist organizations without proper checks. Musk stated, "The @DOGE team discovered that payment approval officers were always instructed to approve payments, even to known fraudsters. They never denied a payment in their entire careers."
For clarification, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is not an official government agency but rather a team created by Musk to analyze federal spending and improve efficiency within government operations.
