Technology Stocks Take a Hit Amid AI Concerns and Cryptocurrency Woes

Wall Street faced a tough day as major technology companies struggled with disappointing earnings reports, raising fears about the AI investment boom. Shares in Intel faced a sharp decline after the company admitted that the demand for personal computers is slowing down due to rising memory chip prices linked to the AI craze.

Kathleen Brooks, the research director at XTB trading group, highlighted that the end of the week showcased a continuation of the sell-off in AI stocks, fueled by concerns over cryptocurrencies’ security. This came after Bitcoin prices fell significantly due to a substantial hacking incident involving Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, which could be one of the largest attacks of its kind to date.

After disappointing earnings from tech giants like Amazon and Intel, investors grew more anxious about the substantial amounts of money being invested in artificial intelligence. Amazon’s stocks fell by 5.5% after it failed to meet profit and revenue expectations. Meanwhile, Intel’s shares plummeted by over 27%. The company warned that the AI boom was creating challenges for its core market, especially as memory chips became more expensive.

Other companies in the AI chip sector also suffered losses, with Nvidia down by 3.2%, Micron dropping 5.7%, and AMD seeing a decline of 10.3%. Alphabet Inc., Google’s parent company, lost another 1.5% following heavy sell-offs earlier, erasing billions from its market value.

As the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite index dropped by 2.3% at the opening, analysts believe that recovery in the AI sector seems unlikely for now, with investors likely shifting focus to non-tech sectors and safer investments.

In contrast, London’s FTSE 100 index experienced a slight uptick during afternoon trading, buoyed by strong quarterly earnings from companies like AstraZeneca and BP. However, shares in NatWest fell over 8% after the bank reported falling net profits, trailing behind its competitors.

European stocks showed mixed outcomes amid recent growth data. The grim performance of tech firms largely reversed the earlier week’s positive sentiment following the IPO filing of AI company Anthropic.

Meanwhile, the Korean Kospi index ended the week with a loss of 3.5%, and Tokyo’s Nikkei fell by 2%. On a brighter note, Hong Kong’s market closed up by 1.5%.

Attention is also turning towards the US midterm elections and their potential impact on the latter part of Donald Trump’s presidency.

In the realm of oil prices, there was a notable increase of around 2% due to rising concerns about supply after reports of incidents involving Iranian tankers.

ExxonMobil shares surged by 1.8% after announcing that its quarterly profits had more than doubled, hitting $15.4 billion thanks to higher oil prices and refining margins amid ongoing tensions in the US-Iran region.

As the week closes, key stock indexes and market figures reflect a volatile yet cautious atmosphere as investors navigate through these turbulent times.
