Even when classes are over, students often have assignments to finish, online discussions to participate in, research to conduct, or lecture notes to review. This work may take place in various locations, such as libraries, classrooms, or student accommodation.

For today’s students, having reliable internet access is not just a luxury; it’s essential for studying, connecting with others, and managing their daily lives on campus.

As more learning materials and group activities move online, strong internet connections are crucial

That’s why having internet access in all the places where students spend their time is so important. To help with this, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is enhancing Wi-Fi connectivity across universities and skills training institutions throughout the country.

The initiative encompasses 539 locations across various public educational institutions

With a total estimated investment of RM663.9 million, the project will be carried out in phases to improve network access across these sites. To date, 294 sites, or about 55%, have been finished and are now operational. The first two phases have been completed, covering 191 locations, while the expansion into the third phase, along with institutions under MARA and KESUMA, is ongoing.

However, the main question is what improved connectivity actually brings to students.

It’s not just about having Wi-Fi; it’s about being able to use it effectively

Better Wi-Fi coverage allows students to access study materials and work on their assignments from various areas on campus, including libraries, social spaces, and dorms. It makes group discussions easier, facilitates access to online courses, and allows for effective research without always relying on personal mobile data.

For students living in dormitories, having reliable Wi-Fi is incredibly helpful when they need to study, complete assignments, or catch up on their coursework from their rooms.
