Japan Almost Shocks India in T20 Cricket Match to Celebrate 75 Years of Friendship

SANO, Japan (AP) — Japan came close to pulling off a significant upset in T20 cricket on Tuesday, marking 75 years of friendly relations with the current world champions, India.

This exciting match took place as part of a special agreement made during talks between Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations.

The game faced a nearly three-hour delay due to traffic issues that kept both match officials and the Indian team from reaching the venue on time. Additionally, a wet outfield pushed the match to be cut down to just five overs per team. Japan gave the three-time world champions a real scare but ended up just two runs short.

Indian captain Shreyas Iyer praised the Japanese team’s performance, saying, “The attitude and approach the Japanese team showed today was impeccable. Kudos to them!”

Iyer also expressed optimism for Japan’s future games, mentioning, “Their approach was outstanding, and I’m sure they are on the right track. With matches coming up against Afghanistan and Nepal at the Asian Games, they’ll be brilliant.”

India chose to bat first, scoring only 32 runs for 4 wickets in their five overs, with Iyer contributing 16 runs off 12 balls. A highlight of the match came from Japan’s young spinner, 17-year-old Charlie Hara-Hinze, who made history by getting Abhishek Sharma out for a duck and also dismissing Iyer.

On the bowling side, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar helped secure India’s low score. Japan’s captain, Kendel Kadowaki-Fleming, scored 12 runs before being out in the fourth over, leaving Japan at 30 for 3.

The final over was tense, with Japan needing eight runs to win. The umpires decided to overturn one call regarding a wide ball as left-handed batter Alexander Shirai-Patmore attempted to switch hit during Patel’s deliveries. Initially, an umpire signaled a second wide ball, reducing the target to five runs off four balls, but after an appeal from Indian players, the decision was reversed.

Although Japan faced defeat, their impressive performance against one of the strongest teams in cricket left a mark. Kadowaki-Fleming shared, “When the game gets that close, losing is a bit tougher to handle, and the emotions can run high. But being able to bring the best team in the world to the last ball of the game is something special.”
