UK Imposes Sanctions on Israeli Settlements, Israel Responds with Measures
The United Kingdom announced significant new sanctions targeting Israeli settlements in the West Bank on Tuesday, causing a swift diplomatic dispute with Israel and warnings from a senior official in the Trump administration.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, with support from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, declared that Israel would shut down the British Consulate in Jerusalem and implement several countermeasures against the UK in response to these sanctions.
As part of its actions, Israel plans to expel British representatives from the International Gaza Support Center in Kiryat Gat, stop British training activities for Palestinian Authority forces in the West Bank, and bar entry to 12 British officials and other citizens accused of antisemitic or anti-Israel behavior.
The UK’s move comes as Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband informed Parliament that Britain will prohibit imports of goods from Israeli settlements, target individuals and companies aiding in settlement expansion, and deny export licenses for arms that contribute to the occupation.
This initiative adds to a coordinated effort with France, Canada, and other European nations, in light of what they describe as “unprecedented levels of settler violence and settlement growth” in the West Bank, including Israel’s E1 settlement project. They argue that these actions undermine the prospects for establishing a future Palestinian state. This situation unfolds just weeks before global leaders meet for the UN General Assembly in New York and less than two months before Israel’s elections, intensifying the already strained relationships between Israel and several of its traditional allies.
While acknowledging Israel’s “legitimate security interests,” foreign ministers from the involved nations also condemned Hamas for its October 7 terrorist attack, regarded as “the most antisemitic massacre since the Holocaust.” They emphasized their commitment to achieving a peaceful two-state solution that allows Israel and a “sovereign, democratic, and viable Palestinian state” to coexist.
Sa’ar expressed that “measures against Israel will not go unanswered,” emphasizing Israel’s resolve to respond to actions taken against it.
During the announcement, Miliband, who identifies as a “proud British Jew,” stated that the sanction efforts focus specifically on settlements rather than on Israel as a whole. He emphasized that Britain would continue supporting trade with Israel within recognized borders.
He also spoke out against rising antisemitism in Britain, asserting that blaming British Jews for the actions of the Israeli government is entirely wrong.
Immediate backlash followed from U.S. Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, who cautioned that Britain could face economic consequences, including restrictions on British businesses in the U.S. if the sanctions continued. Huckabee stressed that such actions could hinder Britain’s trade relationships.
Meanwhile, the Trump administration distanced itself from the coordinated sanctions, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio declaring the U.S. will not engage in any efforts perceived to destabilize the region.
Several Israeli officials condemned the UK’s decision as interference in Israel’s electoral process, with President Isaac Herzog labeling it a “grave miscalculation.” While others warned that such sanctions risked hurting ordinary Israelis and Palestinians alike. Despite criticism, Miliband maintained that the failure to act against settlement expansion would threaten the viability of a two-state solution.
