BRICS Summit in New Delhi: Key Leaders Gather Amid Global Tensions

This weekend, the spotlight will be on New Delhi as leaders from Iran, Russia, and China convene for the 18th BRICS summit. This meeting comes at a challenging time for the group, which was created two decades ago, as conflicts in the Middle East and Europe put pressure on the alliance.

Scheduled for September 12-13, the summit follows heightened tensions from the ongoing conflict between the U.S. and Iran that reignited earlier this year. It also comes shortly after the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, where some of the same leaders met.

BRICS, originally formed in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, has grown to encompass countries like Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

India and Iran Strengthen Ties

One key focus will be the relationship between India and Iran. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to meet Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to discuss trade, connectivity, and energy cooperation. This meeting follows a reaffirmation of their partnership just days earlier.

Amid U.S. economic pressures, Iran aims to strengthen its connections with Moscow and Beijing. The country is also seeking to join the BRICS New Development Bank during this summit, seeking a lifeline as its economic allies come together.

China’s Xi Jinping Resumes Dialogue

Chinese President Xi Jinping, visiting India for the first time in seven years, is another important figure at the summit. His meeting with Modi is anticipated to focus on rebuilding relations after a military clash in 2020 along the India-China border. The two leaders are expected to work on strengthening their economic ties during this significant interaction.

Putin’s Visit to India

Russian President Vladimir Putin is also attending the summit, meeting Modi prior to the event. This marks his first visit to India since the Ukraine war started in 2022, indicating the importance of energy and defense discussions. The Kremlin announced that India’s imports of Russian energy have reached record highs, further signaling strong bilateral cooperation.

Navigating Regional Tensions

The summit occurs against the backdrop of threats from Iran’s Houthi allies towards Saudi Arabia. Both the UAE and Saudi Arabia play crucial roles in India’s strategy in the Gulf, especially since the UAE recently halted trade ties with Iran, complicating the situation for Indian exporters who rely on Dubai as a trading hub.

India is faced with the challenge of balancing various interests while trying to unify BRICS members. Analysts suggest that India’s leadership is an opportunity to highlight cooperation among developing countries and to avoid being drawn into rivalries that could hinder progress.

Experts warn that the effectiveness of BRICS will depend on its ability to address the diverse priorities of its members without falling prey to geopolitical divides. Keeping discussions inclusive and focused on the needs of developing nations will be crucial to the group’s success.

BRICS leaders in New Delhi will also look at the broader impact of global tensions, particularly how they affect energy prices and inflation in nations like India, which is among the largest oil importers worldwide.

As the summit approaches, the world watches closely to see if BRICS can chart a constructive path forward amidst ongoing international challenges.
