Adyen Plans Expansion in India’s Growing Digital Payments Market

Dutch payment service provider Adyen is gearing up to expand its operations in India, with plans to hire more employees as it aims to tap into the booming digital payments and cross-border trade sectors. Gary Young, the President for Asia-Pacific at Adyen, shared these insights during an interview with Reuters.

Young emphasized that Adyen views India as a significant growth market for the long term. The company is keenly anticipating increased activity from international businesses looking to enter India, as well as domestic firms seeking to expand their presence overseas.

Strengthening Local Operations

In 2024, Adyen obtained essential licenses for payment aggregation and cross-border operations in India. The company has seen rapid growth in its local workforce, expanding tenfold since 2023 and reaching 120 employees in the first half of 2026.

Financial reports indicate a remarkable increase in Adyen’s pre-tax profits in India, which rose from €1.45 million in 2024 to €3.18 million in 2025. The company recorded a net profit of €1.06 billion from its global operations in 2025.

Tailoring Services for the Indian Market

To cater to local needs, Adyen is modifying its platform to meet India’s regulatory and payment standards, including data localization rules. The company provides solutions for recurring payments and works with India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI), a widely used instant payment system.

“It’s impossible to succeed in India without UPI,” Young stated, highlighting the system’s capability to handle billions of transactions monthly.

Adyen serves a diverse range of clients, including major companies like Uber and Microsoft. It collaborates with Adobe to enhance payment options in India and assists Indian travel platform Oyo in expanding internationally. Additionally, Adyen is exploring innovations in AI-based commerce, which would allow software agents to assist consumers in product searches and purchases.

As Adyen continues to grow in India, its focus on local needs and international collaboration positions it well within this dynamic market.
