Rani Mukerji was recently honored with the Raj Kapoor Special Contribution Award during the 62nd Maharashtra State Film Awards ceremony, which took place in Mumbai on Wednesday. The award was presented by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, alongside Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar and notable figures from the film industry.

The award acknowledges Rani’s significant contributions to Indian cinema and her deep-rooted connection with the state of Maharashtra. Hailing from Mumbai, Rani has enjoyed a remarkable career over the years, featuring in beloved films such as Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Hum Tum, Bunty Aur Babli, Black, Talaash, Hichki, and Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway.

While accepting the award, Rani expressed her profound link to Maharashtra, describing it as an essential component of her life both personally and professionally. She remarked, “For me, Maharashtra is not just a state. It is my birthplace. It is the land where I built my career. And it is an inseparable part of my life.”

Rani also reflected on how Mumbai has shaped her identity, stating, “Mumbai has given me my identity, my audience, and my career. It has been my home and my safe place. This award will always have a special spot in my heart because it reminds me of my Mumbai, my Maharashtra.”

In her speech, she highlighted the types of roles she has selected throughout her years in the industry. “I have always quietly worked to showcase the strength of women in India through films that resonate with genuine emotions,” she explained.

Rani emphasized the importance of choosing characters that felt authentic and compelling. She spoke about portraying strong women who are resilient, flawed, and not waiting for anyone to save them.

In closing, Rani shared her passion for cinema, stating, “I have never seen cinema as just a job. To me, it’s a deep emotion. And Maharashtra is the heart of that emotion.”
