Trump: Iraq Can Stand Alone Without U.S. Troops
President Donald Trump recently stated that Iraq is now capable of existing independently without American military forces. This comment aligns with Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi’s assertion that armed groups operating outside of the government’s control will find it increasingly difficult to justify their existence once the coalition mission concludes in the country.
The Trump administration continues to encourage Prime Minister al-Zaidi to take actions against pro-Iran militias in Iraq. However, some analysts are opting for a cautious approach as they monitor the situation. A senior official in the Iraqi government announced that the deadline initially set for September 30 to disarm these pro-Iran forces, known as the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), would not be treated as an absolute deadline.
The Iraqi government aims to consolidate control over these militia groups, integrating them into the state system. Some leaders, like Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, have voiced support for this integration. However, factions aligned with Iran, such as Kataeb Hezbollah, have staunchly refused to disarm or integrate.
On August 23, Qasim al-Araji, security advisor to Prime Minister al-Zaidi, clarified, “September 30 marks the departure date for the international coalition, not a deadline for surrendering weapons.” This coalition, primarily led by the United States, played a significant role in combating the Islamic State.
Despite earlier commitments, indications suggest Iraq’s government may be backtracking on enforcing disarmament of the PMUs. Just days before al-Araji’s remarks, a government spokesperson emphasized the importance of transferring weapons to state control.
During a speech at the Baghdad Dialogue Conference, al-Zaidi emphasized the need for all weaponry to remain under government authority, expressing a collective determination to avoid military confrontation and curb influences that could deter investment in Iraq.
In recent months, U.S. sanctions were placed on officials accused of misusing their authority for oil diversion to benefit Iranian militias in Iraq. Reports from a UAE newspaper indicated that an Iraqi deputy oil minister was sentenced to prison for corruption related to these activities.
Amid ongoing challenges, the U.S. State Department has reaffirmed its support for Iraq’s new direction under al-Zaidi’s leadership, expressing a strong partnership aimed at fostering a stable future free from terrorism.
While optimism exists, some experts remain skeptical about the Iraqi government’s resolve to confront the militias effectively. Concerns about violence from these groups against their own citizens continue to loom large, complicating efforts to rein in militancy.
Instances of militia influence affecting government authority were highlighted recently when the Iraqi Counter Terrorism Service arrested a high-ranking official from the PMU, only for him to be reassigned shortly after, sparking criticism.
As the situation evolves, both Iraqi and international observers are keeping a close watch, hoping for decisive steps toward the establishment of a fully sovereign and stable Iraq.
