Flirting: The Secret Ingredient for Lasting Intimacy in Long-Term Relationships

The Benefits of Flirting for Emotional Wellness

Flirting isn’t just about igniting romantic feelings; it can also boost emotional health, as long as it stays within the right limits. Experts believe that playful interactions can lead to various emotional benefits.

Dr. Mindy DeSeta, a clinical sexologist and mental health counselor based in Miami, defines flirting as a special one-on-one interaction that conveys a person’s interest in getting to know another better. According to her, flirting can make us feel good emotionally and physically.

“Flirting activates brain chemicals related to pleasure, reward, and social connections,” she explains. This positive interaction might even reduce stress by lowering cortisol levels. When people flirt, they often feel more attractive and valued, which naturally boosts their confidence and self-esteem.

Dr. DeSeta points out that while flirting is typically between partners or those interested in each other romantically, it can sometimes signal deeper issues if someone feels the need to flirt outside their relationship. “If you find yourself wanting to flirt with someone else, it might indicate problems within your current relationship,” she warned.

An essential part of maintaining a healthy relationship, DeSeta argues, is to regularly flirt and date your partner, which keeps that spark alive.

Often, as relationships evolve, the initial excitement can fade, leading partners to seek that thrill elsewhere. DeSeta explains that this can create a cycle where partners feel the need to fulfill their emotional needs outside of their relationship—especially in the realm of flirting, which is easy to do.

If flirting starts to slip into interactions with others, whether it’s a coffee shop barista or a coworker, DeSeta suggests redirecting that attention back to your partner. She encourages couples to express their feelings openly and share what makes them feel loved and desired.

Rekindling the Flirtation

Dr. Anna Elton, a marriage and family therapist from Massachusetts, highlights that couples often lose sight of the fun they shared in the early days of their relationships. As daily responsibilities pile up, things like affection and fun tend to fall by the wayside, causing stress and resentment.

When couples stay together for a long time, they might stop flirting altogether. Elton encourages partners to find new ways to express affection and attraction for each other. For instance, simple gestures—a 20-second hug or a six-second kiss—can go a long way toward rebuilding intimacy. She also recommends that engaging in personal self-care routines can help strengthen your sense of self and connection to your partner.

However, flirting should be approached with caution. DeSeta notes that not every moment is right for flirtation. Timing and mood matter a great deal. For example, trying to flirt with your partner when they are busy or stressed with chores may not be effective.

Instead, positive body language—like leaning in, making eye contact, and smiling—can indicate that your partner is open to flirting. Knowing when to engage and having open conversations about what feels comfortable for both parties can strengthen the bond and enhance the fun in your relationship.

Overall, embracing the art of flirting, while being mindful of its timing and context, can lead to a happier and healthier partnership.
