Germany Blames Russia for Drone Attack; Closes Diplomatic Facilities
Germany has accused Russia of attempting a drone sabotage at Leipzig/Halle Airport and announced on Tuesday the closure of some Russian diplomatic missions in response. This escalating situation follows an investigation linking Moscow to a drone incident that occurred on August 4.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stated that the Russian consulate in Bonn will be shut down, and the contract for the Russian House cultural center in Berlin will end due to the findings. Authorities discovered a drone with an explosive device near a Ukrainian Antonov cargo plane at the airport, but thankfully, the device did not go off because of a malfunction in its detonator.
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt shared that forensic evidence and intelligence pointed to Russia’s involvement in the attack. He noted that officials also believe a second drone may have collided with a cargo plane nearby. This incident fits into what Dobrindt referred to as Russia’s “well-established pattern of hybrid operations in Europe.”
In reaction to the allegations, the Russian Embassy in Berlin dismissed the claims as “absurd.” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova indicated that Russia would respond in kind to Germany’s actions and criticized the measures as a serious escalation in their diplomatic relations.
In addition to shutting down diplomatic facilities, Wadephul announced stricter entry rules for Russian citizens and further actions against Russia’s shadow fleet. He has also summoned Russia’s ambassador to Germany, Sergei Nechayev, to express Germany’s concerns.
This marks the first time Germany has or directly accused Russia of responsibility for the airport incident, having previously only mentioned “foreign powers.” U.S. media reported that American officials suspected Russia’s involvement early on.
Leipzig/Halle Airport is a vital logistics hub for Germany and NATO allies, supporting military operations and Ukrainian cargo flights.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte expressed full support for Germany’s findings, stating that the evidence is clear and welcoming Germany’s response. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen noted that the European Union is considering more sanctions against Russia, while Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk condemned Moscow for escalating tensions in the region.
The situation has become more complex as Germany warns of rising hybrid threats aimed at military and critical infrastructure. Chancellor Friedrich Merz indicated last week that those responsible for hostile actions would “pay a price.”
In a separate incident, German police reported investigating explosive devices found at a power substation in Brandenburg, following a temporary outage caused by a damaged power line. The identity of those responsible for planting those devices remains unknown.
