West Nile Virus Found in Orange County: Health Officials Issue Warning

Health Advisory: West Nile Virus Detected in Orange County

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – Health officials have issued a warning about the West Nile virus after several chickens tested positive for it. In response to this discovery, mosquito control teams are ramping up their efforts in affected areas.

Orange County Mosquito Control is closely monitoring mosquito populations and increasing treatment activities where the virus has been found. These crews are working round-the-clock to ensure the safety of residents.

Peak Season for West Nile Virus

Officials noted that the spread of West Nile virus tends to spike during the months of July through September. During this time, hot weather and rain create perfect conditions for mosquitoes to thrive. “We are intensifying our efforts in areas where the virus is more common, while still conducting ongoing operations countywide,” stated Steve Harrison, the manager of Orange County Mosquito Control.

During the day, teams focus on inspecting and treating bodies of water that may harbor mosquito larvae. At night, trucks are deployed to spray areas to lower the number of adult mosquitoes.

Although Florida is currently experiencing drought conditions, this does not eliminate the risk of mosquito-borne illnesses. In fact, drought can sometimes lead to mosquitoes and birds clustering around limited water sources, increasing the chances of virus spread.

Recognizing the Symptoms

West Nile virus can cause symptoms similar to the flu, with severe cases potentially leading to serious neurological issues, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

To protect themselves, residents are advised to minimize standing water around their homes, as these are breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Wearing long sleeves, long pants, and using approved insect repellents like DEET or picaridin can also help reduce mosquito bites. Additionally, it’s best to avoid outdoor activities during dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.

Stay Safe

This alert serves as a reminder to remain vigilant against mosquito-borne diseases, especially as the summer progresses. By taking simple precautions, residents can help keep themselves and their families safe.

The information in this report is based on updates from the Orange County Mosquito Control and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
