Men’s Guide: Hair Restoration and Age-Defying Secrets to Try Before Going Under the Knife

As more people become interested in aging gracefully, many are shifting their focus from just living longer to also maintaining their physical appearance as they get older. This trend includes prioritizing how they look and feel, which reflects a growing emphasis on looking attractive at any age.

Experts indicate that this desire is often rooted in psychology, where people feel a disconnect between how they perceive themselves and how they appear physically. Dr. Krishna Vyas, a plastic surgeon based in Manhattan, explains that it’s often not just about age, but about feeling unfamiliar with one’s own image in the mirror.

Interestingly, men are increasingly participating in cosmetic procedures, now accounting for about 15% of all aesthetic treatments. The stigma around men seeking help to improve their looks has significantly decreased over the past two decades, making these options more accessible.

Motivations for men pursuing what is known as “looksmaxxing” vary. Some are looking to keep up in competitive job environments that favor youthful appearances, while others are simply addressing signs of aging, like dark circles or changes in facial structure. Treatments range from non-invasive options like Botox and laser treatments to more surgical procedures.

However, Dr. Vyas points out that while non-surgical treatments can be appealing, they aren’t without risks. Misuse can lead to alterations in the facial structure that might not be desirable. He advises those interested in enhancing their looks to focus on healthier lifestyle choices before resorting to cosmetic interventions.

Here are five fundamental steps he recommends for maintaining an attractive appearance:

  1. Quit Smoking: Eliminating nicotine is crucial for healthy blood flow and skin integrity.

  2. Skincare Routine: Instead of following the latest trends, keep it simple. Experts suggest two key products: sunscreen in the morning to protect from aging UV rays and a retinoid at night to promote skin renewal.

  3. Weight Management: Staying at a healthy weight is essential, as excess weight can lead to inflammation and accelerate aging in skin and tissues.

  4. Address Hair Loss Early: If you notice thinning hair, consider proven treatments like minoxidil or finasteride before it leads to permanent loss.

  5. Stay Active: Engaging in regular exercise, combining both aerobic and strength training, is essential for overall health and longevity.

Dr. Vyas stresses that while aesthetic treatments can be part of a regimen to look good, making healthy lifestyle choices is the foundation of true wellness. These basics are essential for feeling good and looking your best as you age.
