Employee Analyzes Job Roles in the US and India, Revealing a Stark Workload Disparity

An employee recently shared insights on Reddit about the differences in workload and expectations between his colleagues in India and the United States. The post sparked discussions about how workers are treated in these two countries.

In the Reddit post titled “Why is there a difference between US and India employees?”, the employee compared his experiences working with US-based colleagues in similar roles. He found that the working conditions were quite different. For instance, in the US, employees typically manage no more than two projects at any given time and feel comfortable pushing back if given additional work.

In contrast, the situation in India seems quite different. The employee stated that Indian workers are usually expected to juggle three to four projects, with some handling even six. He noted that having just two projects might be seen unfavorably within his Indian team.

The employee also highlighted disparities in pay and workplace policies. He pointed out that US counterparts earn three to four times more than he does, even while working from home. Meanwhile, he is required to be in the office at least three times a week and often has to justify his absences.

His US colleagues expressed surprise at these expectations and encouraged him to address them with management. However, he felt that raising these issues might not result in meaningful changes.

The employee questioned why those in similar roles were treated so differently based solely on their location, arguing that such pressures have reduced Indian employees to mere workhorses expected to take on more tasks continuously.

The post ignited a conversation about workplace culture, especially in India’s tech sector. Many users on Reddit attributed these differences to the nature of global outsourcing, where companies often hire skilled workers in India at significantly lower costs, resulting in less incentive to provide competitive pay and benefits.

Some pointed out that the workplace culture in India, particularly among higher management, contributes to long working hours, often for the sake of client satisfaction. Discussions also mentioned that even within the same company, employees in different locations might face varying policies and benefits—citing differences between offices in Pune and Bengaluru despite their similar roles.

Overall, the dialogue underscored the complexities of workplace dynamics in different regions and the need for a more balanced approach to employee treatment.
