Modi’s Party Faces Setback in Crucial India By-Election Following Protests

Electoral Setback for Modi’s Party in Bihar

In a notable turn of events, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) faced a loss in a key by-election held in Bihar on Monday. This defeat marks the first significant challenge for Modi since he replaced his education minister in response to widespread student protests across the nation.

Prashant Kishor, a political strategist making his debut as the founder of the Jan Suraaj Party, secured a victory over BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar in the Bankipur assembly seat, winning by more than 19,000 votes, as reported by the Election Commission of India.

The Bankipur seat has been a stronghold for the BJP, having voted for the party in four consecutive terms since 2010, with the latest representative being Nitin Nabin, the party president. This election served as a crucial test for Modi and his party, particularly after the recent protests that questioned the BJP’s appeal among young voters in the country.
