Nicaragua’s Leader Declares an End to Future Elections

Nicaraguan Leader Declares End to Elections

Nicaragua’s President Daniel Ortega has announced that the country will no longer hold elections, effectively putting a halt to any potential opposition challenges. Ortega, who has been in power since 2007 and previously governed in the 1980s, made this declaration during a speech marking the anniversary of the Sandinista revolution.

Ortega stated, “There won’t be any more elections here for them to try to seize the government.” This comment underscores his tightening grip on Nicaragua’s political scene alongside his wife, Rosario Murillo, who serves as the vice president and is now positioned as “co-president.”

This declaration eliminates hopes for an electoral challenge as Ortega’s administration continues to strengthen its control over the country’s political institutions. He emphatically stated that “the days when parties backed by the Yankees would return to power are over—never again.”

International reactions have been stern. The Trump administration labeled Ortega’s rule a dictatorship and imposed sanctions on members of his government. The Biden administration has echoed these sentiments, criticizing Ortega for unfairly securing another term after the disputed 2021 presidential election, which was marred by the arrest of opposition leaders and journalists.

In recent years, Ortega and Murillo have advanced their authority through constitutional changes, extending the presidential term and consolidating power across all branches of government. Such reforms have granted them control over the armed forces, police, and judicial system.

Many opposition leaders have either been imprisoned or forced into exile, with some stripped of their citizenship. A U.N. team of experts has accused Ortega’s government of systematically violating human rights in a bid to maintain power, with some actions potentially qualifying as crimes against humanity.

In summary, the political landscape in Nicaragua under Ortega’s leadership is increasingly repressive, raising serious concerns about human rights and democratic governance in the country.
